Born in 1939 in Oberlenningen, Germany, Rainer Daumiller began creating furniture in his elementary school years. He collaborated with a classmate to design a desk and wardrobe, which were then crafted by a local carpenter, with Daumiller personally creating the unique sculptural handles. Following his graduation from high school, he pursued an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker, a natural path for someone with a passion for hands-on work.
Additional education was acquired via the ideas of Austrian philosopher, social reformer, and architect Rudolf Steiner as well as through weekly lessons with a teacher from Stuttgart's Waldorf School. It was through this teacher that Daumiller learned how to transform seemingly unrelated pieces of wood into purposeful objects, guided by the unique qualities of each wood fragment. This method greatly influenced Daumiller's aptitude for understanding and utilizing materials, allowing their innate characteristics to guide his designs.
After years of eclectic and intuitive training, and a lack of interest in the prospect of factory work, the young designer relocated to Denmark in 1959 in search of greater learning. There, he applied to the Furniture Department at the Artisan School Kunstværkerhåndskolen and became a student at the Design School Designskolen in 1960. Under the tutelage of instructors such as Ole Gjerløv Knudsen and Ole Vestergård, Daumiller honed his skills in carpentry and crafting, often in cutting-edge materials like acrylic - a truly innovative choice for the 1960s.
Today the robust, sculptural forms of Rainer Daumiller's body of work stand as a testament to his deep passion for the natural environment and a profound understanding of materials - utilizing each material's inherent characteristics to produce exceptional works of sculptural furniture.
