Born… into a world of tradition and craftsmanship, Pierre Paulin was anything but conventional. His early influences came from the fluidity of Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics—movements that valued simplicity, functionality, and beauty in equal measure. Though he initially aspired to be a sculptor, a right-hand injury redirected his path, guiding him toward furniture design. The transition proved serendipitous, as Paulin would go on to transform the very way people experienced comfort.   Paulin’s vision… was shaped during his time at the École Camondo in Paris, where he studied design and absorbed the radical innovations sweeping across mid-century Europe. Rejecting the rigid, rectilinear forms that dominated postwar interiors, he instead embraced movement, fluidity, and softness. His partnership with Dutch manufacturer Artifort in the late 1950s gave rise to some of his most celebrated works—pieces that seemed to defy gravity, sculpted from foam and stretched fabrics rather than rigid frames and stuffing.
