PH Artichoke Light
Designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958, the PH Artichoke pendant light by Louis Poulsen brings a remarkable sculptural presence to Danish modern lighting. Originally created for Copenhagen’s Langelinie Pavillonen restaurant, where it still hangs today, the design grew from Henningsen’s lifelong exploration of how to shape light.
Its distinctive silhouette comprises 72 metal leaves arranged in twelve tiers. Each leaf helps shield the light source and reflect illumination through the surrounding layers, creating comfortable, glare-free light from every angle. The intricate composition gives the pendant its organic character and makes it as compelling when unlit as when illuminated.
The PH Artichoke expresses the close relationship between form and function at the heart of Danish modern design. Its dramatic appearance emerges from the precise work of controlling light, while the careful assembly of its leaves reflects Louis Poulsen’s enduring commitment to craftsmanship.
