Pacha Collection by Pierre Paulin

Born… into a world of tradition and craftsmanship, Pierre Paulin was anything but conventional. Raised in Paris in 1927, he found himself drawn not to the ornate stylings of the past but to the sleek, organic forms that would come to define modern design. His early influences came from the fluidity of Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics—movements that valued simplicity, functionality, and beauty in equal measure. Though he initially aspired to be a sculptor, a right-hand injury redirected his path, guiding him toward furniture design. The transition proved serendipitous, as Paulin would go on to transform the very way people experienced comfort.   Paulin’s vision… was shaped during his time at the École Camondo in Paris, where he studied design and absorbed the radical innovations sweeping across mid-century Europe. Rejecting the rigid, rectilinear forms that dominated postwar interiors, he instead embraced movement, fluidity, and softness. His partnership with Dutch manufacturer Artifort in the late 1950s gave rise to some of his most celebrated works—pieces that seemed to defy gravity, sculpted from foam and stretched fabrics rather than rigid frames and stuffing. The Mushroom Chair (1960), Ribbon Chair (1966), and Tongue Chair (1968) became instant icons, merging ergonomic innovation with an almost playful, futuristic aesthetic.   The Patcha… that was designed in 1975, at a time when traditional seating still prioritized formality over ease, the Pacha Collection was a radical departure. Paulin envisioned seating that offered a sensation of floating—a cloud, a hug, an embrace of the body. Its low-slung, rounded form invited a new kind of lounging, one that encouraged relaxation and casual elegance. Where traditional furniture dictated posture, the Pacha Collection responded to the sitter, cradling them in softness. Despite its daring design, the Pacha was deeply in tune with the changing cultural landscape of the 1970s—an era of shifting norms, unstructured comfort, and a breaking away from rigid social conventions. Homes were becoming more personal, more informal, and Paulin’s vision fit perfectly into this emerging world.   Nearly five decades later… the Pacha Collection is reborn, faithfully reissued by global design house Gubi. This licensed reissue preserves Paulin’s original artistry while introducing modern refinements in craftsmanship and materiality. No longer a relic of the past, the Pacha has found a new audience, proving that its sculptural beauty and uncompromising comfort are truly timeless. Reimagined for today’s interiors, the collection now includes standalone lounge chairs, modular sofa configurations, and even an outdoor edition, ensuring that Paulin’s dream of effortless comfort extends beyond walls and boundaries. Whether in a private residence, boutique hotel, or an artful workspace, the Pacha adapts, offering an enveloping sense of ease wherever it sits.   Paulin’s legacy… is not merely one of furniture but of a radical rethinking of how we live. His designs did not demand conformity—they invited interaction, movement, and play. Today, the Pacha Collection remains an ode to that philosophy, a reminder that great design is not just about how a piece looks but how it feels, how it lives, how it invites us in. With Gubi’s revival of this iconic series, a new generation can experience the joy of the Pacha Collection, as relevant today as it was when Pierre Paulin first imagined it—a place to land, to linger, to truly unwind.   Now reimagined… for contemporary living, the Pacha Collection invites you to experience comfort as Pierre Paulin intended—uncompromising, effortless, and timeless. Whether as a statement lounge chair, a sculptural sectional, or an outdoor retreat, these pieces are designed to transform the way you sit, unwind, and inhabit your space.
