Description
The KK47000 Safari Chair stands as a defining expression of Kaare Klint’s design philosophy—where historical form meets disciplined refinement. Drawing from the practical ingenuity of early campaign furniture, Klint reimagined a proven archetype into a modern icon of clarity, function, and craftsmanship.
His inspiration came from a set of safari chairs observed in photographs belonging to an American cinematographer and his wife. These chairs were likely derived from the Indian Roorkhee chair, widely used by the British military and considered among the earliest examples of self-assembling furniture. Their defining features included glueless joints, tool-free assembly, and a construction that tightens under weight to enhance strength and stability.
Rather than simply replicating the form, Klint applied a rigorous process of simplification and proportioning. The result is a chair reduced to its essential elements, where each component serves both structural and aesthetic purpose. First presented in 1933 at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition, the Safari Chair embodies Klint’s systematic approach to design: precise, thoughtful, and deeply rooted in material understanding.
Lightweight yet robust, the KK47000 Safari Chair achieves its strength through intelligent construction. Its refined proportions and meticulous craftsmanship elevate it beyond its utilitarian origins, making it a timeless piece suited to contemporary interiors while remaining faithful to its historical lineage.
