9209 Table Lamp

A master of 20th-century industrial design and metalwork, Paavo Tynell arrived at a moment when electric illumination was reshaping the modern world—and his vision helped define its aesthetic. The 9209 Table Lamp, first produced in 1940 and later reissued by GUBI, is distinguished by its sculptural spun-brass shade, affectionately known as the “Kypärä,” Finnish for “helmet.” Poised on a graceful, brass arm, its brass stem is hand-wrapped with lacquered rattan, creating a visual and textural contrast to the polished brass shade. Each shade is individually crafted and finely perforated in Tynell’s signature triangular motif—a feat requiring bespoke tools and meticulous handcraft. The result is both functional and poetic: while the form directs light downward, the delicate constellation of perforations releases a dusting of radiance, casting up a gentle, textured glow reminiscent of starlight.
